Why am I running slow (Revisited)

Why I Run Slow

A few years back, I noticed my run speed had decreased. Concerned, I decided to hire a running coach to diagnose what was causing this change. The coach came highly recommended and his fee reflected that. I met him at a park for our first meeting. We talked for a few minutes about my training and my goals. He then set up several cameras to record my stride and told me to run down a trail and then turn around and run back.

I started down the trail and had made it maybe about 25 yards, when he yelled at me to stop.

“I know why you run slow.”

Wow, this guy is good. I have been with him for about 15 minutes and he has already solved my problem.

"You run slow because you run slow."

What the…?

The lesson

If you spend all your time running at a casual pace, that becomes your new “hard” pace. You slow down. Then, you create a new slower pace as your “max” because it feels uncomfortable. He had crushed my ego, but he was exactly correct. I run slow because I run slow. To get better, you need to push limits from time to time.

If you are struggling with your investigations, do you need to try something new?

If your victims don't connect with you, are you just going through the motions?

If your cases all seem to be stuck, do you have a system that lets you adapt to each case?

We all need a reminder to get out of the rut and push.

Want some help to break out of the rut?

My fault. 100% Before trial, I had told him to line up an expert to explain victim behavior. He was convinced he didn’t need one because the victim’s story was so implausible. Implausible, but not impossible. I should have pushed. I let him make the call...
